MANIPUR FLOODS: SCHOOLS TO REMAIN CLOSED TILL JULY 4 AS HEAVY RAIN INUNDATES SEVERAL AREAS

Manipur Rains:  Heavy rainfall has caused floods in numerous areas of Manipur's Imphal West and Imphal East districts, said officials on Wednesday. The state government has announced a holiday for all government offices today, and schools will be closed until Thursday due to the floods, according to officials.

The Imphal River broke its embankment in Singjamei Oinam Thingel in Imphal West, as did the Kongba River at Kongba Irong and sections of Keirao in Imphal East, according to a senior official.

The Iril River also overflowed at Sawombung and sections of Ksheteigao, Imphal East. "Huge volumes of river water entered residential localities… Over a 3-km stretch of the India-Myanmar road has also been flooded and more than 1,000 people were affected,” he said.

Several sections of the northeastern state have been pounded by severe rain in recent days.

The Imphal River, which is the biggest river in the Manipur valley, overflowed on Tuesday night, flooding sections of Yumnam Khunou, New Checkon, Mahabali Road, Palace Compound, and portions of Khurai in the Imphal East district.

After fissures appeared along the river banks, residents and government workers in the Imphal West district laboured to reinforce the retaining walls and river banks at Singjamei, Bamon Leikai, and Yaiskul.
