SWEDISH CITY OFFERS LAND FOR SALE AT PRICE OF A COFFEE CUP

ALBAWABA - Authorities in a Swedish city are selling around thirty pieces of land for an astonishingly cheap price - only 9 US cents per square meter, the price of a cup of coffee – in an unexpected attempt to boost the area's housing market.

Tucked away in Yotuna, a little village 200 miles southwest of Stockholm, these properties have been empty for years in spite of several efforts to find purchasers. According to Mayor Johan Manson, the program is being carried out in the context of Sweden's rural population reduction and economic stagnation.

"The housing market in our region, and indeed nationwide, has slowed significantly due to high interest rates and economic downturn," Manson said. He underlined the need of reviving regional economies and tackling demographic issues like aging populations and falling birth rates.

The fact that buyers are not obliged to live in Sweden or invest in the property they buy makes it a desirable option for individuals wishing to construct holiday homes or make investments. Manson said that in order to spark interest and draw more people to the region, it was essential and unusual to sell the property at such cheap prices.

With a population of 13,000 overall and around 5,000 in its main town, Yotuna, on the shores of Lake Vänern, is a picturesque rural town surrounded by the biggest lake in Scandinavia.

This program demonstrates Sweden's creative response to economic difficulties and promotes rural population development.
